Every year you vow to spend more time planning so holidays go smoother. Now is the time. Here are a few things every business can do to make this year’s holiday rush easier – and more profitable!
Stock up! Avoid the down time of running out of register paper, menus, packing slips, shopping bags and printer ink and toner. Make your purchases of these non-expiring consumables in advance so that valuable time isn’t wasted for your staff or your customers.
Review your Shipping, Return and Vacation policies. Make sure your policies are up to date with the current costs and expectations. Then be sure to review the policies with all employees so that customers will get clear and consistent communication from all company contacts. Make sure employees understand how to request days off and expectations about time off during the holidays. Clear communication now will avoid heartaches later.
Update your shipping contracts. Understand the requirements from your shipping partners for pick up and delivery times and costs. Review rates and understand how to make choices among several carriers for the best rates AND service.
Clear your desk and create a simple file system. In the bustle of holiday deliveries and events, paperwork will stack up. Head into the holidays with a clean file system. Then use three baskets to help you stay on top during the season:
- URGENT – TODAY: review and empty each day
- BEFORE 12/24 (or 12/31 depending on your business): Review and empty each week, if possible.
- AFTER 12/25 or 12/31: After the season work.
Don’t forget about your most powerful ally in keeping your desk clear: the waste basket.
