Some years I can muster up the old wonder and magic of the holiday season and other years it is much harder. Maybe it’s the blaring of Bing Crosby starting on November 1 or seeing potted palms festooned with blinking lights in Applebee’s that just makes me think that there are too many people pushing me to be happy and open my wallet this time of year.
And just when I think I truly am slipping into my jaded years, Charlie Brown comes along and tells me that the search for the true meaning of Christmas began before I was born. There is something reassuring in seeing Charlie and Linus walking past the blinking garish displays and talking about their search for what it all means. Add a wordless Vince Guaraldi jazz soundtrack and my mind wanders back to a time when watching the ABC special (brought to me by Dolly Madison) brought everyone in the family together to watch our only TV in the house.
Linus always knows the true meaning. But year after year, I find I am Charlie Brown: looking around in amazement at the commercialism around me, wondering if there is still a chance for an authentic connection or if Lucy is right and it is a commercial racket run by a big eastern syndicate.
But I buck up, wrap a few gifts, make a batch of cookies, watch it snow and remember that what I can give is a lifetime of Christmas memories to my children and grandchildren. We watch Charlie Brown on our digital flat panel TV and I think maybe for them, this is what Christmas is all about.
